In the Depth – Discovering Luxor’s West Bank in Detail Colossi of Memnon

These two massive sandstone statues, each standing over 18 meters high, once flanked the entrance to the grand mortuary temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Despite centuries of damage, they remain an iconic symbol of Luxor. Ancient Greek and Roman travelers wrote about the mysterious “singing” sound one statue emitted at dawn, believed to be the voice of the gods.

Valley of the Kings

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Kings is home to more than 60 tombs carved deep into the Theban hills. The vibrant wall paintings inside depict scenes from the Book of the Dead, guiding the pharaohs through the afterlife. Notable tombs include Ramses III, whose chambers are filled with vivid hunting scenes, and Ramses IX, adorned with bright astronomical ceilings.

Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut

Built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, this temple is considered one of ancient Egypt’s architectural masterpieces. Its three terraces, connected by long ramps, feature colonnades, statues, and reliefs depicting Hatshepsut’s divine birth and her trade expedition to the fabled Land of Punt.

Valley of the Queens

Known in ancient times as Ta-Set-Neferu (“Place of Beauty”), this site contains over 90 tombs belonging to queens, princes, and princesses. The crown jewel is the Tomb of Queen Nefertari, wife of Ramses II, whose vibrant murals are so well-preserved that they look freshly painted.

Medinet Habu Temple

Dedicated to Ramses III, this vast complex is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Its towering pylons and detailed reliefs tell the story of the pharaoh’s battles against the Sea Peoples, offering a unique look into Egypt’s military history.
