Abu Simbel is home to two breathtaking temples carved directly into the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BCE. These temples are more than architectural wonders—they are symbols of power, love, and divine kingship.
The larger of the two, this temple is dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun, and Ptah, but it primarily glorifies Ramses II himself. Its colossal façade features four 20-meter-high seated statues of the pharaoh, watching over the Nile Valley like eternal guardians.
Inside, the temple stretches deep into the mountain, with halls lined by sculpted pillars and battle reliefs, including scenes from Ramses’s famous victory at the Battle of Kadesh. On two days each year (February 22 and October 22), the temple is perfectly aligned so that the sun illuminates the sanctuary’s inner statues—a celestial feat of ancient engineering.
Just beside it stands the smaller yet equally enchanting temple dedicated to Ramses II’s beloved wife, Queen Nefertari, and the goddess Hathor.
Uniquely, Nefertari is depicted at equal height to the pharaoh on the temple’s façade—an unprecedented honor for a queen in ancient Egypt. The temple’s interior is filled with elegant columns, soft carvings, and scenes of royal offerings and divine rituals, showcasing the queen’s elevated status and the deep affection Ramses held for her.
